In Texas, school districts are independent taxing authorities whose boundaries are set by the elected board officials. School district boundaries do not coincide with municipal boundaries. For example, there are four independent school districts within the city limits of Austin where neighboring school districts have expanded into new subdivisions.
The Texas Education Agency oversees the Independent School Districts (ISDs) and awards performance reports based on the results of standardized tests and other factors such as drop-out rates, student teacher ratios, staff facilities and training, finances etc. This report is known as the Academic Excellence Indicator System. ISDs and individual campuses are awarded performance ratings. Since we have neighborhood schools, it is usually more reliable to check campus ratings rather than the overall ISD report. The Austin ISD is our largest district with nearly 80,000 students.
